How does the "Activ"
coating work?
The Activ (outside or exterior) surface of the glass absorbs
ultra-violet energy from exterior daylight.
Pilkington Activ glass functions in two ways. First, it
breaks down organic dirt through a PhotoActiv process. Second,
rain water "sheets" down the glass like an Invisible
Squeegee rinsing away dirt and debris on the window.
Manual window washing or spot cleaning may be necessary to remove
paint, a heavy accumulation of dirt, or other material that can
get on the glass.
Activation
Please allow 3 to 7 days exposure to exterior
daylight for the glass to become "ACTIVated". thereafter,
normal exposure to daylight will keep the glass active.
Caution
DO NOT use scouring agents, steel wool, razor blades or other
hard objects to clean the Activ glass surface. These materials
will permanently damage the glass and void applicable warranties.
Manual Cleaning
Rinse thoroughly with clean, soft water to remove all surface
dirt particles. Clean carefully, using a soft cloth or sponge
and generous amounts of warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly one
more time to ensure detergent residue is removed. Following manual
cleaning, the glass will naturally re-activate after a few days. |
Spot cleaning
For spot cleaning tougher deposits (e.g. paint) use a clean soft
cloth and a solvent such as denatured alcohol or acetone with
appropriate safety precautions. (Care should be taken to eliminate
direct contact between acetone or solvents and vinyl window frames
or paint work, as they can be damaged). Rinse thoroughly with
clean, soft water.
Dry Weather Conditions
During dry weather, a build-up of dust can be removed with a
light spray from a garden hose.
If the hose water is hard, add 2 or 3 drops of liquid dish washing
detergent to water in a pint bottle spray garden hose attachment
or use a portable 1 or 2 gallon, hand pump pressurized, garden
spray bottle with plain distilled water from a hardware store.
Avoid Abrasive Products
Should mortar or cement products come in contact with any glass
surface, they need to be thoroughly rinsed off the glass immediately,
before hardening. Extreme care must be taken during this rinsing
process, as these products are highly abrasive and can physically
damage the Activ glass surface.
Silicone Precaution
Do not allow material with silicone to contact the self-cleaning
surface. If contact has occurred, wash the contacted area only,
with acetone or a proprietary silicone solvent and follow with
a detergent wash and clean water rinse. This will reduce the
contamination but will probably not eliminate it. |
